Hiking Grassi Lakes and biking Healy Creek

FINALLY I am very close to catching up at least with the Banff stuff :) It's raining right now, so I can't go outside and I decided to make use of the time.

Grassi Lakes is just a little 45 min hike very close to the town of Canmore. Susi and me wanted to go a couple of weeks before but ended up not going because of the heat. The day Steph, Jess and me decided to go it wasn't super hot, but nice enough. A good day for a little exploring!
The 'difficult' path

Pretty flowers

There's 2 trails, a 'difficult' one where you can see a bit more and a literally almost straight easy path. Of course we went up on the difficult one ;) Turned out to be not bad at all, just a tiny little climbing session in the end. It paid of, there was a beautiful waterfall to see on the way up! Also, it was kind of cool because there were little streams of water all over that you had to cross. A nice little hike.
Waterfalls...

..and a lot of forest
Up at Grassi Lakes... wow! Such pretty colors! See for yourself :) I don't know if you can actually see it, but on that mountain in the back there's a lot of rock climbers.

so clear!

Little explorer :)

THESE COLORS!!!!
We ended our little excursion with an afternoon lunch/dinner (?? Is there a word for a meal between lunch and dinner??) at an Indian Restaurant in Canmore before making our way back to Banff. What a nice day. Thanks girls!

One of my last biking adventures in Banff was biking Healy Creek. We (Sophie and me) were planning on going and then the weather decided to be a bitch and it was raining. We went to the market, had a little stroll around and then decided on going biking anyway. A little rain doesn't do any harm so off we went.
The first part is very nice and paved and then there's a little turnoff into the woods. Well. Rain doesn't do a muddy forest floor very good... But also... a little mud... no problem!!

With a couple of sections inbetween were we had to push our bikes (mud, steep hills) we reached Healy creek. It actually took us quite a while to finally arrive but turning around wasn't gonna happen. Healy Creek is just beside Sunshine road I have seen the turnoff for it lots of times already going there skiing. We sat for a while and had some snacks and enjoyed the view.

Getting our bikes clean again

THIS bridge

We decided right away that we were gonna go back on the highway (no fighting back through this mud again), so we needed to cross the river. There was some construction going on, but there was a bridge. So no problem! Coming closer, we saw that besaid bridge wasn't as finished as it looked like. Meaning to actually use the bridge, you had to climb a ladder. And we had bikes. Inconvenient. Luckily there was no one around so we just entered the construction site and in a team effort pulled up the bikes onto the bridge and went over. Well. Little (illegal?) adventures. Oops. But how else were we supposed to cross? ALSO there was no sign all along the way saying 'hey, people, you can't cross the river, just letting you know!'. As unusal as it is for me as a German, it is actually perfectely legal to bike along the highway and also quite common. So off we go. Safely back to Banff :)

Susi's visit to Banff!

Beginning of June my friend Susi from home (Munich) came to Canada for a visit!!! We went to school together and know each other already for quite a long time and I was so excited that she was coming to Banff! We had a heat wave without any rain before and of course, the second day she arrived Banff showed its nicest side: torrential rainfall. So we ended up at the movies... Saved the exploring for the next day.

Met this little guy!

The next day, the heat was back! We went on a little hike through Johnston Canyon anyway! We wanted to go to the Upper Falls and then back, but spontaneously decided on hiking all the way to the Ink Pots! What a great decision! See for yourself :) Although I have to question our mental health as we went for that 6km one-way hike on a hot day without water... Well. We were rewarded with beauty and had a little desperate water drinking session at the car after.

Smart us just taking cameras... ;)

Don't ask how it took until there weren't any other people in this picture...

Of course, Lake Louise and Moraine Lake can't be missing on a sightseeing trip in Banff National Park! We made a big day out of this and went there on the same day. What beauties!! Unfortunately my camera battery gave up before Moraine Lake... This made me very very sad. Have a couple of pictures on my phone but they are not half as great... Leaves me without any super great photos of Moraine Lake... Well. Now it's a bit too late as I have to leave this beautiful country in less then a week. But this just means I need to come back for them!!

Also, we went on a little roadtrip to Kananaskis country to see Spray Lakes and just a bit of the beautiful forrest up there! Seeing all these pictures makes me realize again how long it'll be until I'll see all of this again! I've got so many memories! Home is where the heart is and I most definitely left a little piece of mine in the Rockies! Susi's visit was really great and I am glad I got to show her around!

Summer in Banff: Biking, hiking and bears ;)

Came spring and summer, there's no way I would spent my free time inside. I've never been this type of person and I had a hole to fill: May 18th was the last day of skiing so I had to switch to other outside activies! Luckily, Banff has so much to offer that I never got around to even half try all the hiking trails and bike trails that are around. But I tried my very best!

Spray River trail is like a 15km roundtrip that takes you along Spray River, over a bridge, back on the other side and you end up at the Banff Springs Golf Course. It's very scenic, and easy tour and good to start the season with. Offers some nice views as well :)
Winding through the forest: never forget bear spray!

Having a little rest with gorgeous mountain views all around

With Hana I had an awesome hiking partner and we hiked up to the Lake Agnes Tea House at Lake Louise and a little higher up to the Little Beehive (that's the name of that peak as far as I remember...). But it doesn't matter what it's actually called I guess, it's the beauty of the view that was the most stunning about this. Lake Louise was so very turqouise it was almost unreal. None of these pictures are edited, this is the color as it was! Also, I saw my very first bear taking the Bow Valley Parkway!!! Very impressive. Didn't want to meet this guy up close though! Also we had a little misjudgement of the weather conditions and snow up to our thighs close to the peak but the view was very very rewarding!

Wouldn't want to be super close to this guy as cute as he seems...

Lake Louise from above!

So so turqouise.
In Canmore there is a peak called Mt. Lady Macdonald that we also chose to hike. This time it was 3 of us, Hana, Tyler and me. A little later in the year to avoid snowy surprises this time ;) And another mountain offering gorgeous views, this time of Canmore and the Bow Valley! The sky was blue with only a few clouds and it was a very warm and beautiful day. To get all the way to the peak was a bit of scrambling involved but the view was rewarding for everything! I do admit to have complained a little in the end but I made it up and I am very proud of myself :) Back at the bottom we stuck our feet into the little creek to cool down. Check this out!

This is all for now :) I will need to wait for better wifi to continue writing as this is reallyprobing my patience... Still lots of stuff to come!
